Delmer Sheeley

Oskaloosa. Delmer Sheeley, 87, of Oskaloosa, died Thursday, January 13, 2011, at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines. Early in life, Delmer farmed in the area with his family. He served in the U.S. Army from 1943 until discharged in 1946, and served in France, Ireland, and England. Following his discharge, he returned to Oskaloosa and worked at a brickyard. On March 21, 1947, he was united in marriage to Marie Lindblom at Kansas City, Kansas. He started working for the Iowa State Highway Commission, first as a temporary helping with flood relief, and then earned a full time position with the D.O.T. He began full time employment as a truck driver, but held many other positions through the years and finally as a head mechanic before retiring in November, 1985. Among his many talents, he was also a certified welder. Delmer enjoyed fishing, camping, and doing anything mechanical. He was very independent, and also enjoyed making things out of wood and refinishing old snow sleds. He was a 41 year member of the American Legion, and the V.F.W.

His family includes his wife, Marie, of Oskaloosa; three brothers: Gene Sheely of Pella, Darwin Sheely, Oskaloosa, and Roger (& Donna) Sheely of Carlisle; two sisters: Violet Valster, Pella, and Sandra Hudson of Delta; two sisters in law: Zola Sheely of Ogden and Norma Spooner of Grinnell; two brothers in law: Gordon (& Florence) Lindblom of Barnes City, and Kenneth Lindblom of Marshalltown; and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services for Delmer Sheely will be held Tuesday, January 18, 2011, at 10 a.m. in the Bates Funeral Chapel with the Reverend Vince Homan officiating. Burial will be in the Barnes City Cemetery at Barnes City, with graveside military rites given by members of the Oskaloosa American Legion, D.A.V., and V.F.W. Visitation will begin Monday after 11 a.m., and the family will be at the funeral chapel on Monday from 6 – 8 p.m. to greet friends and relatives. Memorials may be made to Mahaska Hospice or to Stephen Memorial Animal Shelter.
