(OSKALOOSA, Iowa) — The Crisis Intervention Services (CIS) Crime Victims’ Rights Committee has selected Lt. Troy Boston from the Oskaloosa Police Department to receive one of the 2019 Crime Victims’ Service Awards. One of only four recipients of the 2019 awards, Lt. Boston was nominated in March due to his continued efforts to provide care and compassion when working with survivors of sexual assault and other violent crimes.

“We are pleased to give Lt. Boston this award to show appreciation for him going the distance when helping survivors, as well as his dedication to building a working relationship between agencies,” says Ed Cummings, Violent Crime Advocate at Crisis Intervention Services.

The award is a part of the Crime Victims’ Rights Week event that is held every April. The event is dedicated to learning about victimization, the effect victimization has on individuals, families, friends and the community, and to promote laws, policies, and programs to help victims of crime. This is the second year that the CIS committee has presented physical awards to Region 5 recipients, which encompasses the counties of Appanoose, Davis, Jasper, Jefferson, Keokuk, Lucas, Marion, Mahaska, Monroe, Poweshiek, Wapello, and Wayne.

“The award is for those who have gone above and beyond to help victims of any crime,” says Christopher Cruz, head of the Crime Victims’ Rights Committee at CIS. “Not because their job asked them to do it but it’s more that their moral character compels them to because they truly care and they have exemplified this through our relationship with them.”

Crime Victims’ Rights Week was April 7 – 13, 2019. Although the awards winners were chosen by the committee back in April, the physical presentation of the awards was delayed until recently. Other Region 5 recipients include Detective Justin Bailey from the Pella Police Department, Sheriff Gary Anderson from the Appanoose County Sheriff’s Department, and Investigator Steve Kivi from the Poweshiek County Sheriff’s Office.
