Obituary:
Betty Eloise McLaughlin was born January 20, 1935 in Humeston, Iowa the daughter of Forrest and Lucille B. (Mickey) McKelvey.
As a girl, she was raised in the Humeston and Leon areas before her family moved to Des Moines. Betty graduated from Roosevelt High School in Des Moines. Following high school, she worked for an insurance company in Des Moines. On November 16, 1945 she was united in marriage to Wendel McLaughlin. To this union two daughters were born: Phyllis and Joyce. Wendel was a career Naval Officer, and their family lived all over the world, until moving to the Knoxville area in 1968. Betty and Wendel lived in Attica and she was very active in the Attica United Methodist Church. Following Wendel’s death in 1973, Betty moved to Knoxville and attended the First United Methodist Church, where she served as historian and was active in the U.M.W. Betty also worked in the Marion County Treasurer’s Office for many years prior to retirement.
Betty passed away on Tuesday, January 4, 2011 at her home at the age of 85 years.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; sister, Phyllis Horton and a brother, Jack McKelvey.
Those left to cherish her memory include her two daughters: Phyllis (William) Paine of Mt. Pleasant, Iowa and Joyce (Nick) Smith of Riverside, Iowa; 3 grandchildren: Nichole (John) Flint, Dave (Erica) Smith and Jessica Smith; 9 great-grandchildren: Darrian Spilman, Abigail Flint, Nicollette Smith, Ian Flint, Illiana Smith, Jillian Hesseltine, Elijah Flint, Caden Smith and Aleah Flint and many other family members and friends.
