#6 Story of the 2012-2013 Year
Oskaloosa–Arguably the most successful program in the history of William Penn Athletics, the Statesmen baseball team put another feather in its proverbial hat this spring to grab #6 on the top-ten list.
In spite of an injury-riddled pitching staff, William Penn finished Midwest Collegiate Conference play with a flurry for its 13th league title. The Statesmen owned a 6-7 mark just past the midway point of the league slate, but ended the year with six wins in their final seven contests to claim the crown.
Capping and highlighting the run was a road doubleheader sweep of Viterbo as WPU rallied in both matchups for improbable victories.
William Penn would not have even had a chance at the title had it not been for a marathon, 14-inning win over Mount Mercy five days earlier. The game was the longest since William Penn joined the NAIA in 2002.
Five players represented the navy and gold on the all-MCC squad, while Head Coach Mike Laird notched his ninth Coach of the Year award.
