WPU Falls in Opener of Holiday Tourney
Milwaukee, Wis.–The Statesmen women’s basketball team struggled in its first game after Christmas in a 74-41 loss to #6 Cardinal Stritch at the Cardinal Stritch Holiday Classic Monday.
William Penn (5-9) shot just 22.4% and permitted the Wolves (12-2) to hit 44.4% of their shots. The visitors fell behind 10-2 out of the gate, but then scored the next eight points to tie the contest for the only time on the day.
Unfortunately, CSU closed the half on a 28-5 run and rolled in the second stanza for the win.
Jessie Kreuser (Sr., Mendota Heights, Minn., Physical Education) and Katie Golomski (Sr., Milwaukee, Wis., Psychology & Sociology) each reached double figures with ten points. Kreuser also pulled down a game-best 11 rebounds for her third double-double of the season.
Kau’ilani Miki-Han (Fr., Irvine, Calif., Communications) recorded six points in the setback. Asia Cochran (So., Belleville, Ill., Physical Education) tallied three assists, while Kreuser and Miki-Han both stole two passes.
The navy and gold were outrebounded 48-42 and committed 22 turnovers, compared to 18 for the home squad.
“We never really got going, but all the credit goes to Cardinal Stritch; they were that good,” Head Coach Mike Brown said. “They defended and rebounded well. Jessie had a good double-double today to lead us.”
