WARRIORS ROUT MARSHALLTOWN IN ICCAC SWEEP

Ottumwa, IA – The Indian Hills Softball team picked up its first two Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) wins of the season on Monday after defeating Marshalltown Community College 11-1 and 16-2 at R.L. Hellyer Field. The wins extend the Warriors’ win streak to 12 games.

In the first conference series of the season for both sides, the Warriors pounded out 27 hits on the day while not committing an error in the field. The two wins improve the Warriors’ overall record to 14-5 on the year and move to 2-0 in league play. The Warriors have now won 44 consecutive contests vs. the Tigers dating back to the 2001 season.

Freshman Carly Campbell (Homestead, IA/Williamsburg) starred for the Warriors offensively on Monday, going 5-6 at the plate with two home runs and seven RBI. The designated player homered in each game to lead the offensive onslaught. Breanna Newton (Bettendorf, IA/Bettendorf) added a home run in each contest for the Warriors as the team connected on five home runs overall on the day.

As a team, the Warriors rank 15th in the nation with 40 home runs on the year despite playing seven less games than any of the 14 teams ahead of them. The Warriors’ .689 slugging percentage ranks fifth in the nation.

After unfavorable weather forced the delay of the weekend series between the two sides, the two conference foes squared off in Ottumwa on Monday with Marshalltown playing as the home team on the scoreboard. The Warriors opened the scoring with three runs in the first as Campbell delivered an RBI single and Bryanna Mehaffy (Burlington, IA/Burlington) added a run-scoring bunt single. Newton connected on her first home run of the day to lead off the third before Campbell added a two-run shot two batters later for a 6-1 lead.

Kennedy Preston (Carlisle, IA/Carlisle) delivered an RBI single in the fourth and an RBI sacrifice fly in the fifth to push the Warrior lead to 10-1. Campbell closed out the scoring in the fifth with an RBI single, her third hit of the contest.

TJ Stoaks (Lenox, IA/Lenox) added a pair of hits, including a double in the win while adding a run for the Warriors.

Madi Huisman (Ankeny, IA/Ankeny Centennial) went the distance in the circle to improve to 7-2 overall. Huisman won her third consecutive decision and has not lost a game since March 2 for the Warriors.

The Warriors pulled away early and often in game two, scoring multiple runs in all five innings of play. The Warriors built a 2-0 lead after the first inning behind run-scoring hits from Sydney Anderson (Elkhart, IA/North Polk) and Campbell. Alex Beard (Albia, IA/Albia) homered to center in the second to spark a five-run frame. Destiny Lewis (Indianola, IA/Indianola) added an RBI double while Anderson added another RBI single. Campbell extended the lead to 7-0 with a two-run home run, the freshman’s second of the day.

Lewis and Gretta Hartz (Runnells, IA/Southeast Polk) each recorded RBI base hits in the third for a 9-0 lead. Newton connected on a deep home run to center field, a solo shot in the 4th. The Warriors added five more runs in the fifth, including RBI base hits from Mehaffy and Beard.

The 17 hits in game two are tied for the second-most in a game this year for the Warriors. Lewis finished the game 3-3 at the plate while Anderson, Campbell, Mehaffy, Beard, and Yanna Roberts (Davenport, IA/Davenport North) each added two apiece.

Freshman Madie Anderson (Mt. Pleasant, IA/Winfield Mt. Union) worked four innings of scoreless ball in the circle without allowing a hit. The righty struck out seven batters to increase her total to a team-best 59 punchouts on the year.

Indian Hills is back in action Tuesday afternoon at home vs. Ellsworth Community College. First pitch is set for 1:00 PM.
