Des Moines–The Statesmen women’s outdoor track and field team came home with two new school records as it competed at the Midwest Collegiate Conference Outdoor Championships Thursday through Saturday.

William Penn placed fifth out of six teams with 38 points, while St. Ambrose defended its title with 297 points.

Whitley Schertz (Jr., Eddyville, Iowa, Physical Education) and Rosemary Bailey (Jr., Fayetteville, Ark., Communications) highlighted the event by setting new program marks. Schertz snapped her own pole vault mark by clearing a height of 8-6.25 to place third. Bailey is also now on top of the 10,000-meter run list with a time of 40:38.06, good enough for fifth at the Championships.

Meaghan Foster (So., Centerville, Iowa, Undecided) was the lone navy and gold competitor to score points in multiple events, taking sixth in the discus (123-7) and eighth in the hammer throw (129-6).

Tarah Alexander (So., Cedar, Iowa, Undecided) and Tamara Weltch (Sr., Oskaloosa, Iowa, Human Services/Sociology) came up just short of accomplishing the feat as well. Alexander had the best overall performance by taking second in the 1,500-meter run in 4:57.85, but just missed points by finishing ninth in the 800-meter run in 2:34.57. Weltch was seventh in the discus at 120-3 and tenth in the hammer at 127-2.

Alyssa Phillips (Fr., Gurnee, Ill., Communications), in fourth at 5-0.25, and Alora Simmons (So., Newton, Iowa, Elementary Education), in seventh at 4-10.25, both scored points in the high jump, while WPU’s 4×400-meter relay team also got on the board with a fifth-place showing (4:20.96).

Ninth-place finishes came from Shaniece Dishmon (So., Harvey, Ill., Physical Education) in the 100-meter dash (13.29 seconds), Amanda Schrempf (So., Marshalltown, Iowa, Sociology) in the javelin (97-5), Kristin Lastovka (So., Brooklyn, Iowa, Business Management) in the discus (117-9), and Emma Hoerr (So., Chillicothe, Ill., Physical Education) in the shot put (34-5.75).

Molly Jo Smith of St. Ambrose was named MCC Track Athlete of the Year, while Val Veiock of Grand View received Field Athlete of the Year honors. St. Ambrose’s Dan Tomlin was tabbed as MCC Coach of the Year by his peers.

Next: In the next week or so, some individuals may compete in a last chance meet in one final effort to qualify for nationals.
