Summer Lunch Program to Have New Sites

Oskaloosa Summer Lunch Program

Oskaloosa Summer Lunch Program

In its first year of service in 2014, Oskaloosa Summer Lunch served 2,400 meals to kids and teens. And this summer, that number could be a lot higher.

“We’re really excited about all our additions this year,” said Martha Comfort, director of Oskaloosa Summer Lunch.

Those additions include serving lunch at Oskaloosa Elementary School.

“We were able to partner with a summer learning program the school is launching this year,” said Comfort. “Throughout the month of June, kids in that program will get breakfast and lunch five days a week, courtesy of Oskaloosa Summer Lunch.”

The goal behind adding new locations and times is to help ensure that anyone wanting to attend the program can.

“The new sites will make the program accessible to even more families around Oskaloosa. We’re always listening to where the needs are and trying to accommodate them,” said Comfort.

And Oskaloosa Summer Lunch is more than just a free meal. After lunch, kids can head into activities, focusing on team work, reading, physical activity, and of course, fun.

Here’s a list of all the places anyone 18 and under can join in on a free lunch June 1st until August 14th:

Oskaloosa Elementary School: June – Monday through Friday, Noon to 12:45

July and August – Monday, Wednesday, Friday, Noon to 12:45

Oskaloosa Public Library: June, July and August – Monday, Wednesday, Friday, 11:15 to Noon

New Hope Community: June, July and August – Monday, Wednesday, Friday, Noon to 12:45

Edmundson Park, Kiwanis Shelter: June, July and August – Monday, Wednesday, Friday, Noon to 12:45

Oskaloosa Summer Lunch will also provide lunch to those involved in George Daily Theater Camps.

Volunteers play a huge role in this program and are responsible for all food preparation, services and clean up as well as the program planning and implementation.

“People from all walks of life from high school students to retirees help make this program a success throughout the summer months,” said Comfort.
