Oskaloosa–The William Penn baseball team combined timely hitting with miscues by its opponent to sweep Viterbo in a Midwest Collegiate Conference doubleheader Thursday.

The Statesmen (12-10, 2-2 MCC) won the opener 5-2 and then took the nightcap 2-0.

The hosts owned a 9-7 edge in hits and were helped by five Viterbo errors. The V-Hawks (10-10, 0-2 MCC) took the early lead with a run in the second, but William Penn answered with two in the third.

Viterbo tied it back up with another run in the fifth. Fortunately, the Statesmen had the last laugh with three unearned runs in the sixth for the victory.

Joel Medina (Jr., Palmdale, Calif., Sociology) was 2-for-3 with two runs scored, while Stan Simmons (Jr., Brooklyn, N.Y., Physical Education) finished 2-for-4 with two RBIs. Enrique Alvarado (Jr., Lancaster, Calif., Sociology) matched Medina by rounding the bases twice.

Starter Jared Shoning (Fr., Des Moines, Iowa, Business Management) tossed five strikeouts in 3 2/3 innings, but did not figure into the decision. Corey Lathram (So., Brentwood, Calif., Physical Education) did, however, earning the win to move to 2-1 with three strikeouts in 3 1/3 innings of relief work.

Jayme Mueller (Sr., Mundelein, Ill., Sociology) was WPU’s starter in the second matchup and was exceptional on both the mound and at the plate. The senior tossed five shutout innings, allowing just four hits with five strikeouts (one walk).

His biggest impact came with his bat in the seventh frame, though, with the teams knotted in a scoreless tie. With two on and two out, Mueller striped a single up the middle to score both Simmons and Alvarado.

Ricky Alvarez (Sr., Sylmar, Calif., Sociology) finished with two of the Statesmen’s four hits (VU also had four hits).

Jacob Logan (So., Galesburg, Ill., Psychology) picked up the win with two perfect frames of relief. The sophomore (1-1) managed two strikeouts.
