Grinnell student-athletes recognized at Honor G ceremony

GRINNELL, Iowa – Five senior men’s student-athletes were honored at the 2018 Grinnell College Honor G Banquet Saturday at Herrick Chapel.

Antonio DiMarco ’18 and Evan Bunis ’18 were winners of the Morgan Taylor ’26 Award for outstanding athlete in a single sport. DiMarco, a soccer player, won the award for a team sport and Bunis, a golfer, for an individual sport.

DiMarco is a multiple-time All-Midwest Conference selection who also earned a spot on the prestigious CoSIDA Academic All-District Team. He led Grinnell to two MWC Tournament appearances and was second in the league in points and goals and third in assists. He ranks second in Pioneer history in career assists, sixth in points and seventh in goals.

Bunis collected All-MWC honors for the second time earlier this month with a second-place finish at the league meet. He ranks sixth in Grinnell history for career stroke average with a mark of 77.71. He also has the third-best 18-hole score in program history, fourth-best for 36 holes and fifth-best for 54.

Carson Dunn ’18, a football player, claimed the Coaches Award. Connor Gregorich-Trevor ’18 won the George B. Critchett ’25 Service Award and Kevin Anderson ’18 the Honor G Scholastic Award. Both are on the Pioneers’ cross country and track teams.

Margaret Giles ’18 and Maria Venneri ’18 won the Grace McIllrath Parker ’11 Award for outstanding athlete in a single sport. Giles, a volleyball player who also played basketball, won it for a team sport while Venneri, a swimmer, for an individual sport.

Kayla Morrissey ’18 and Emma Zimmerman ’18 claimed the Joyce Buck ’56 Award for top athlete in more than one sport. Morrissey, who played basketball and softball, was honored in the team sport division while Zimmerman, a track and cross country runner, won it in the individual category.

Giles, an All-Midwest Conference selection, guided the Pioneers to back-to-back appearances in the MWC Tournament. She ranks fourth all-time at Grinnell for career assists with 2,693 and assists per set with 7.87. Her efforts helped Grinnell win 30 matches in the last two seasons after posting just 10 victories the previous two years.

Venneri exits Grinnell as the school record holder in four events, the 100- and 200-yard backstrokes and as part of the 200 and 400 medley relay teams. A two-time MWC Swimmer of the Year, she helped the Pioneers to four league titles in her time here and claimed seven events at the league meet in 2018 – the 200 and 400 individual medleys, 200 backstroke, 200 and 400 medley relays and 400 and 800 freestyle relays.

Morrissey is an All-Region and All-MWC performer in both softball and basketball, plus earned CoSIDA Academic All-District honors in the latter. In softball, she helped the Pioneers to a school record for wins this season and established Grinnell career records in eight categories including games played, runs, hits, triples and RBIs. In basketball, Morrissey finished as the Pioneers’ career leader in free throws made and attempted and led the league in five categories in 2017-18.

Zimmerman is a two-time All-Region and three-time All-MWC honoree in cross country. She has the fourth fastest 6-kilometer time in the Pioneers’ storied history. In track and field, Zimmerman is fresh off winning the 5000 at the MWC Outdoor Championships. She ranks in Grinnell’s all-time top 10 in both the indoor and outdoor 500 races as well as the outdoor 10,000 event.

Zimmerman also won the Honor G Scholastic Award, while Whitney Teagle ’18 claimed the Honor G Service Award. Teagle competed in cross country and track.
