PELLA—Senior pitcher Ryan Goetzinger (Mason City) fired a one-hit shutout to lead the Central College baseball team to a 1-0 win over the University of Dubuque Friday before the Dutch pulled out a 4-3 triumph in the nightcap.

Goetzinger struck out three and walked one in the complete seven-inning game to improve to 1-0 in his first decision after four starts. Dubuque’s lone hit was a single to center field in the fourth inning.

“Ryan threw strikes, hit his spots and had a great game today,” coach Adam Stevens said. “It’s as good as he’s ever looked and I’m happy for him. He’s a hard worker.”

Central (10-5 overall, 2-2 conference) remained scoreless until the sixth inning, when shortstop Jordan Judkins (junior, Marshalltown) singled through the left side with two outs. He stole second and crossed the plate on a rip through the right side from designated hitter Robbie Rushing (junior, West Des Moines, Valley HS).

“We moved some things around with the order offensively and executed well at times,” Stevens said. “But it was our pitching and defense that made us successful today.”

Dubuque (3-11 overall, 1-5 conference) jumped on top in the second game with a run in the first inning. Central posted two in the third and one in the fifth as catcher Jace Ahrendsen (junior, Clarence, North Cedar HS) scored in each frame. Dubuque responded with single tallies in the fifth and seventh innings, tying the score at 3-3.

Central ended its four-inning scoring drought in the bottom of the ninth. Center fielder Sam Stetzel (senior, Perry) hit a shot to right center and advanced on a sacrifice bunt by first baseman Seth Carson (senior, Woodridge, Ill., Downers Grove South HS). A Dubuque error and walk loaded the bases. After a Spartan strikeout, Central was down to its last out when Stetzel scored the game-winning run on another Dubuque error.

“Dubuque’s record is extremely misleading and we knew one mistake here or there would be the game,” Stevens said.

Junior hurler Judson McKown (Maple Plain, Minn., Orono HS), Central’s third pitcher of the game, improved to 2-2 with the win. He gave up one hit and no runs in three innings while fanning a pair and walking one. Central’s starter, Michael Jontz (senior, West Des Moines, Valley HS) allowed two runs on six hits in five innings of work while striking out three and walking three.

Central committed on errors on the day.

“We took a big step forward today and it was good to see us play like we’re capable,” Stevens said. “We knew it’d be a battle and we know it will be again tomorrow.”

The squads complete the four-game Iowa Conference series at 1 p.m. Saturday at the A.N. Kuyper Athletics Complex field.
