Remember when sports weren’t all about winning and losing? Think back to when making friends and having the time of your life was the essence of every game. Can you recall those backyard pickup games you once had over games of football, basketball, soccer, horseshoes or whatever it was that made you smile? Through a collaboration between Imagine the Possibilities, United Way of Mahaska County, and the Mahaska County YMCA, the Adult Challenger Softball League brings us all back to those fond memories of playing sports the way they were truly meant to be played, for fun.

Last year marked the inaugural season of the Adult Challenger Softball League, a League for adults in the Mahaska County community that face daily physical or mental challenges. With 24 players last season, and a whopping 35 registrations this year, the League is poised to continue to be a success both on and off the field. Whether swinging for the fences, fielding a ground ball, or encouraging the next player on deck, players, volunteers, and coaches of the Adult Challenger Softball League exemplify the core values of the YMCA: caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility.

The 2014 edition of the Adult Challenger Softball League features four games on Sunday afternoons at the Lacey Complex, pitting the Jets and the Cubs in opposing dugouts. With one remaining game scheduled in August on the 24th, and in September on the 7th and 21st the two teams are set for some epic action. YMCA Executive Director Dawn Collins says, “The Adult Challenger Softball program has been nothing short of excellent in terms of player relationships, volunteer involvement, and YMCA staff participation. In just two years we have grown the program to one that everyone involved can take pride in.”
