Debra DeLaet will be presenting on William Penn University’s Oskaloosa campus on April 15, 2019 about Human Rights in the Everyday.

(OSKALOOSA, Iowa) – William Penn University has received funding from Humanities Iowa, a private, non-profit state affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities, to host Human Rights in the Everyday, a presentation given by Debra DeLaet at 6:00 p.m. on Monday, April 15, in the Musco Technology Center (MTC) on William Penn University’s Oskaloosa campus.

DeLaet’s presentation will explore human rights in the everyday. Specifically, she will discuss how efforts to promote human rights need to be integrated into our everyday lives—in our families, our workplaces, and our civic spaces. The talk seeks to broaden the vision of what makes up human rights and social justice work by exploring the abilities of people not formally part of international human rights and institutions. The talk will build on a vision of citizenship that calls upon individuals to do more than vote in order to produce meaningful civic change. It will examine the potential for everyday citizens to engage in transformative practices intended to advance human rights outside of the context of formal law and governance.

William Penn University Professor of Sociology, Michael Collins, said he is excited to attend the presentation and thinks the topic of human rights in the everyday fits into the culture of the school.

“Given that we are a Quaker institution committed to uphold the dignity of each individual, it is fitting that we welcome Dr. DeLaet to inspire us on the imperative necessity of acknowledging and advocating social justice and human rights,” said Collins.
