Eight OMS sixth grade students under the direction of Michelle Dickinson participated in the second annual Southeast Iowa District Elementary Honor Band. The honor band was held on April 23, 2016, at Washington High School in Washington, IA.

The honor band, which included full group rehearsals, sectionals, and a team building activity, was led by Wendy Morton, director at College Schools in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Students performed five songs which included Abandoned Treasurehunt, where audience voted on whether they thought the treasure was found or lost forever.

After the day, a few students shared some highlights from their first honor band experience.

Sixth grade trombone player Mina Kim said, “My favorite part of the day was the trombone sectional because we got to work on specific notes and rhythms in the music.”

Osky clarinet player Ella Roach said, “I liked being able to practice with other young musicians and learn a few of their techniques for certain rhythms.”

Trombone player Ashlyn McDougall said, “I enjoyed playing music with kids from different schools and hearing how they play.”

Percussionist Carter Waddington said, “I liked getting to know people and making new friends.”
