Homer Cameron, 99, of Oskaloosa passed away Tuesday evening, May 12, 2015, at Skiff Medical Center in Newton.

Homer Elmer Cameron, son of Elmer Alexander and Ida Blakley Cameron was born on March 4, 1916, in Adams Township of Mahaska County, Iowa.

Some of Homer’s earliest memories included making his toys, fishing, hunting rabbit, squirrel and fox, playing baseball and bowling. As a child, he attended Centenary Church in Adams Township and the Chapel Hill, Allgood, Johnson and West Center schools, graduating from the 8th grade at Oskaloosa’s Grant School. After completing the 8th grade, he worked as a farmhand for various farmers in the local area.

In 1946 he started work at Rolscreen, now known as Pella Corporation. During his work at Pella, he was introduced to his soon-to-be wife, Doris Moon of Knoxville. He and Doris were united in marriage in Fairfield, Iowa on February 7, 1949. After retiring from Pella Corporation in 1981, after 34 years and 3 months, Homer and Doris enjoyed many bowling tournaments & leagues, hunting, fishing, pitching horse shoes, baseball, and traveling with tours throughout the United States.

In 2012, Homer and Doris sold the home they had built and moved to Maple Ridge Assisted Living in Oskaloosa. Homer moved to Newton in early 2015 when his health began to decline.

Homer was a member of the Gospel Tabernacle now known as the Fellowship Bible Church.

Homer is survived by his wife and long-time friend of 66 years, Doris; several nephews; and a host of friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; all of his siblings: John Blakley, Katheryn Alice Schoenenberger, Mabel Irene, Velma Louise, Verla May, Virgil Wayne, and Leslie Ivan; his step-mother, Esther Cameron; a half-brother, Robert Lee; and half-sister, Vonda Rae.

Funeral Services for Homer will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, May 15, 2015, at Garland-Van Arkel-Langkamp Funeral Chapel with Pastor Rodney DeRonde of the Good News Chapel officiating.
Burial will be in Graceland Cemetery in Knoxville.
Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. – 6 p.m., Thursday at the funeral chapel; the family will be present from 10 a.m. to service time on Friday.
Memorials may be made in his name to The Salvation Army in Oskaloosa.
