Several sixth grade students from Oskaloosa Middle School participated in the first annual Southeast Iowa District Elementary Honor Band, which was held on April 25, 2014, at Washington High School.

The honor band was lead by Dorothy Jacobi, director at Center – Point Urbana Schools in Center Point, Iowa. The day included full group rehearsals, sectionals, and a team building activity. Students played six songs, which included selections published by C.L. Barnhouse in Oskaloosa, IA.

Students also had the opportunity to learn from Gary McCurdy, the guest tuba player. McCurdy performs throughout the Midwest as a “Tubador” on an antique instrument called a helicon, which he played for such classic pieces as “When the Saints Go Marching In” and “Joshua Fit the Battle of Jericho.”
