Schwab Reaches 1,000 Points in Statesmen Road Loss

The Statesmen had an upset victory slip through their fingers Saturday against Mount Mercy. Alec Schwab led all players with 29 points.

Des Moines–Alec Schwab (Sr., Peru, Ill., Business Management) reached a major milestone Wednesday, but his efforts and those of his teammates were not enough to get the Statesmen men’s basketball team a win away from home in a 95-79 Midwest Collegiate Conference loss to AIB.

Schwab scored 16 points, but needed only three to get to 1,000 points in less than two years as a Statesmen cager. He is the 21st player in program history to surpass the plateau and his current 1,013 points ranks 18th. In his two seasons at Illinois Valley CC prior to coming to WPU, Schwab managed 995 points, so for his collegiate career he has amassed over 2,000 total points.

Unfortunately, that was about the only positive Wednesday as William Penn (12-8, 1-3 MCC) could not slow down the surprise Eagles, who are now 14-5 (4-1 MCC). The visitors were outshot 55.1%-37.9% and outrebounded 41-39.

WPU never led on the evening and was tied just once at 5-5. AIB then went on an 11-0 run and the Statesmen never got closer than nine points again.

Oliver Wells (Sr., Cedar Hill, Texas, Business Management) guided the navy and gold effort with 23 points and three assists. He was 6-for-7 at the charity stripe as the visiting squad was strong at the line, going 19-for-23 overall.

Mike Aldeman (Sr., Iowa City, Iowa, Education) also joined the double-figure crew with 11 points, while Jesse Utt (So., Cowgill, Mo., Industrial Technology) added seven points as well. Logan Alexander (Sr., Eddyville, Iowa, Physical Education) topped the team with nine rebounds.

“It was very classy of AIB to announce that Alec had scored 1,000 points,” Head Coach John Henry said. “I have never seen the host team congratulate a road team. It was a really nice gesture.”

Next Up: William Penn travels to Davenport Saturday to face St. Ambrose in MCC action at 3 p.m.
