Oskaloosa–Alec Schwab (Sr., Peru, Ill., Business Management) put the navy and gold on his shoulders in the second half and led the Statesmen men’s basketball team to a 71-64 Midwest Collegiate Conference victory over Viterbo Saturday.

William Penn (12-6, 1-1 MCC) outshot the V-Hawks 49.1%-36.9%, but had to overcome 12 visitor trifectas to break through in league play.

In a contest that contained four ties and 16 lead changes, the home team scored six of the first seven points, but trailed 32-31 at intermission.

The game continued to seesaw in the early moments of the second stanza, but with his team down one to Viterbo (9-8, 0-1 MCC), Schwab took over with numerous layups and free throws. The senior scored 15 straight points for the navy and gold and the Statesmen held off every V-Hawk rally.

Despite making just two three-pointers, Schwab finished with 29 points on 10-for-18 shooting (7-for-7 FT). He also had all three of his team’s steals.

Prior to Schwab’s late dominance, Shane Bosek (Jr., Lowry, Minn., Physical Education) was WPU’s top contributor by posting a double-double of 21 points and ten rebounds. Erik McGee (Sr., Oskaloosa, Iowa, Elementary Education) corralled ten boards as well as the Statesmen finished with a 42-30 tally on the glass.

Oliver Wells (Sr., Cedar Hill, Texas, Business Management) also helped on the offensive end with nine points in addition to seven assists.

WPU overcame having three more turnovers (15-12) than its opponent by posting eight more free throws (12-4).

“Alec took over the game late and was great on both ends,” Head Coach John Henry said. “Erik and Shane did a great job of rebounding as well.”

Next Up: William Penn remains in Oskaloosa next Saturday to host #19 Mount Mercy in MCC action at 3 p.m.
