Pair of Top Tens in Sin City
Las Vegas, Nev.–The Statesmen women’s bowling team gave two strong performances as it competed in its final pre-holiday events of the year this week.
William Penn opened the week by placing tenth out of 17 teams at the Glenn Carlson Las Vegas Invitational on Saturday and Sunday with 7,884 pins in nine regular games. Wichita State (Kan.) headed qualifying with 9,323 pins and then also took the bracket tourney crown. WPU did not qualify for bracket play.
Dasha Kovalova of Wichita State was first with a 233.9 average (2,105 pins), while Stephanie Adams (So., Souris, Manitoba, Business Management) had a great sixth-place showing with a 204.6 average.
Kelsey Johnson (Sr., Montgomery, Ill., Secondary Education) was high as well with a 176.9 mark. Montana Pence (So., Stronghurst, Ill., Elementary Education) and MacKenzie Boyd (So., Knoxville, Iowa, Human Services and Sociology) both started seven games with Pence at 170.4 and Boyd at 167.1. Briell Newberry (Fr., Holland, Mich.) had a 157.1 clip in seven games as well.
Cybil Lennie (Fr., Ottumwa, Iowa, Undecided) rounded it out by averaging 164.7 pins in six games.
The Statesmen finished off the week by being ninth in the 17-team Las Vegas Collegiate Shootout on Monday and Tuesday with 9,816 pins in six regular games and four sets of Bakers. Wichita State wrapped up its perfect week with 11,946 pins for the title. Kovalova was again the best roller at 224.8.
Johnson (7th, 208.7) and Newberry (9th, 206.8) were both in the top ten, while Pence had a 182.5 mark in six starts as well. Niona Bruce (So., Cedar Rapids, Iowa) tallied 169.2 pins in five rounds and Adams was at 185.5 in four starts.
NOTE: As of the time of this release, not all of the scores were included in the final results for the Shootout.
