Harold Everett Miller, 85, of Oskaloosa, died Sunday, December 7, 2014, at the MHP Hospice Serenity House in Oskaloosa. He was born June 24, 1929, in Mahaska County, the son of Raymond and Ellen Bemisdarffer Miller.

Harold attended Lincoln School in Oskaloosa. At a young age he went to work for Whitlatch Dairy and later for the M and St. L. Railroad as a painter with their construction crew. Last he worked for Mundt Painting and Decorating in Ottumwa, retiring from there after 21 years.

On June 9, 1950, he was united in marriage to Alice Boyle in LeMars, Iowa. To this union three children were born, Deborah, David and Paul. Dutch enjoyed being an outdoorsman, hunting, fishing, traveling, remodeling old houses and playing good jokes on people. He also enjoyed visiting with people and going to auctions. Dutch delighted in spending time with his family, especially his children and grandchildren.

He was a very active member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Oskaloosa where he was involved with 4th Degree Knights of Columbus and volunteered for many projects. He loved kids, many of the projects he volunteered on were for the benefit of children in our community including many hours building the playground at the new elementary school, the Oskaloosa Stadium Project and the MCRF bike trail.

Harold is survived by his wife of over 64 years, Alice Miller of Oskaloosa; a daughter and her husband, Deborah (& John) Besco of Oskaloosa; a son and his wife, Paul (& Dee) Miller of Oskaloosa; four grandchildren, Jodi (& Rich) Krejci, Matt (& Shawna) Besco, Ona (& Kenny Robertson) Miller and Kara Gann; two step grandsons, Dan (& Vanessa) McClure and Dave (& Heidi) McClure; 23 great grandchildren; a great-great granddaughter; a brother and his wife, Dale (& Lucille) Miller of Muscatine; a sister, Maxine Jordan of Edgington, Illinois; three sisters-in-law; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Dutch was preceded in death by his parents; a son, David Miller; a sister; four brothers; and two brothers-in-law.

Mass of the Christian Burial will be held Wednesday, December 10, 2014, at 10:30 a.m. in the St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Oskaloosa with Reverend Jeffry Belger celebrating with Msgr. Bob Spiegel and Reverend Thomas Spiegel con-celebrants.
Burial will be in the St. Mary’s Cemetery in Oskaloosa.
The Rosary will be recited Tuesday evening at 7 p.m. in the Bates Funeral Chapel. The Bates Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
Visitation will begin Tuesday morning after 11 in the Bates Funeral Chapel and the family will be at the funeral chapel from 5-7 Tuesday evening to greet friends and relatives.
Memorials may be made to St. Mary’s Catholic Church or MHP Hospice Services.
