William Penn Continues Season at Grand View Invite

Des Moines–The Statesmen cross country teams got back on the course Friday by competing at the Grand View Viking Classic.

The William Penn men placed 11th out of 13 teams with 263 points, while Morningside took the crown with 47 points. The women placed eighth out of ten teams, while Drake rolled the competition with 15 points as the top five runners in the field were all Bulldogs.

Garret Ehlers of Morningside crossed the line first in the 8K men’s race with a time of 25:47, and Emma Huston of Drake earned the win in the 5K women’s competition in 19:06.

Deane Wichelt (Jr., Durant, Iowa, Mechanical Engineering) guided the Statesmen men by placing 33rd out of 123 runners with a time of 28:25.

Nick Thomas (Jr., Salmon, Idaho, Physical Education), in 60th at 29:35, and Blake Washington (Sr., Knoxville, Iowa, Public Accounting), in 64th at 29:42, also finished under 30 minutes.

Carlos Lizama (Fr., Victorville, Calif., Undecided) was next in 80th place with a time of 30:16, while Dustin Ewalt (Fr., Clinton, Iowa, History/Government) rounded out the varsity in 84th at 30:41.

Jeremy Mooney (Fr., Clinton, Iowa, Physical Education) (86th, 30:49), Quintin Marshall (Sr., St. Louis, Mo., Computer Science) (106th, 33:08), and Miguel Decuir (Fr., Baton Rouge, La., Undecided) (110th, 34:33) ran for WPU as well.

Rosemary Bailey (Sr., Fayetteville, Ark., Communication) headlined the women in 41st place (101 runners) with a time of 21:47.

Sade Myers (Sr., Honolulu, Hawaii, Elementary Education) was next in 55th at 22:58, while Lilly Walters (Fr., Boerne, Texas, Biology) and her time of 23:16 was good for 58th.

Megan Evangelista (Sr., Chanhassen, Minn., Biology) (85th, 27:48), Makenzie Ficek (Sr., Eugene, Ore., Sociology) (91st, 30:43), Vanessa Kieres (Jr., Chicago, Ill., Physical Education) (92nd, 30:44), Brittany May (Sr., Gladstone, Ore., Biology) (94th, 32:49), Janet Kuskie (So., Grant, Neb., Public Accounting) (97th, 32:49), Jessie Kreuser (Jr., Mendota Heights, Minn., Undecided) (99th, 34:38), and Rachael Tozier (Jr., Phoenix, Ariz., Business Management) (100th, 36:28) wrapped up the women’s performances.
