William Penn University Head Coach Todd Hafner leads his team to the field at Homecoming 2012.

Oskaloosa–The Statesmen football squad is seeking to make history early in 2013 by finally defeating St. Francis (Ind.) as the teams hook up for a dynamic MSFA crossover game Saturday.

#16 William Penn (1-0) will host the #5 Cougars (0-0) in its home opener at 1 p.m. Both teams were 9-3 last year and qualified for the Football Championship Series.

STATESMEN BROADCASTING: Saturday’s game can be followed on the radio (740 AM), on TV (MCG Channel 7), and on the internet at http://origin.peg.tv/pegtv_player?s=wpenn (video and audio) or http://client.stretchinternet.com/client/kboe.portal (audio only)

SERIES HISTORY: William Penn is 0-5 all-time in its series against St. Francis (Ind.), but last year’s matchup was by far the closest.

The Statesmen fell from the ranks of the unbeatens with the loss, their first ever at Lacey Complex Stadium.

The Cougars led from start to finish. WPU did, however, close the gap to two at the start of the fourth quarter, but could get no closer.

Tyler Hafner (So., Oskaloosa, Iowa, Undecided) entered for an injured Taylor Parsons (Sr., The Woodlands, Texas, Sociology) at quarterback and paced the offense with 94 rushing yards and 51 passing. Parsons added 73 rushing yards as well.

Marcus Kerrigan (Sr., Cary, Ill., Sociology) provided most of the scoring with a school record four field goals.

2002–St. Francis (Ind.), 49-14
2003–St. Francis (Ind.), 49-14
2006–St. Francis (Ind.), 39-6
2007–St. Francis (Ind.), 71-7
2012–St. Francis (Ind.), 28-19

WILLIAM PENN PROFILE: Todd Hafner is in his tenth year as head football coach at William Penn, entering this fall with a 61-40 career record.

Hafner, who became the program’s all-time winningest coach last fall, guided William Penn to 28 wins over the last three years. The Statesmen led the NAIA in rushing all three regular seasons. William Penn shared the Midwest League crown in 2010 and 2012.

The 2008 and 2010 Midwest League Coach of the Year, Hafner was also the recipient of the VSN NAIA Coach of the Year and the NFCA Region 2 Coach of the Year honors in 2010. As skipper, he has produced 139 all-conference players and 14 All-Americans.

Hafner graduated from Pittsburg State in 1994.

William Penn made easy work of #9 Bethel (Tenn.) in its season opener, crushing the Wildcats 34-8.

The navy and gold held a 351-156 edge in yardage, including 292 yards on the ground. The defense was actually the more effective side of the ball, limiting the Wildcats to -2 yards at halftime.

Evan Ressler (Jr., Cascade, Iowa, Biology) had a big day with 133 rushing yards and a touchdown. Parsons finished 3-for-5 for 59 yards. Micheal Welch (Sr., Houston, Texas, Physical Education) had a team-best seven tackles, but Nick DiMarco (So., St. Charles, Mo., Physical Education) was the real defensive star with five stops, including three for loss, in addition to two sacks. He was named a BSN Player of the Week for his efforts.

Kerrigan received MWL Special Teams POW laurels by making all four of his extra points and owning a 46.0 yard punt average over three kicks.

For the 2012 season, William Penn averaged 30.0 points and 361.5 yards per game, including 302.5 rushing and 59.0 passing. The squad was second in the NAIA in total rushing yards (3,630) and was third in rushing yards per game.

William Penn committed 16 turnovers during the season.

Defensively, the Statesmen gave up an average of 14.8 points and 317.5 yards, including 184.2 passing and 133.3 rushing. William Penn was fifth nationally in points allowed per game.

Scott Adams (Jr., Park City, Utah, Sociology) headlined William Penn with 90 tackles. DiMarco had a team-best 6.5 sacks (14.5 tackles for loss), while Andrew Reed recorded four interceptions. The Statesmen forced 33 turnovers.

Kerrigan went 33-of-39 in point-after-attempts and 12-of-14 in field goals. He ranked sixth in the nation in field goal percentage (85.7%) and tenth in total field goals.

The team again utilized a two-punter, rugby-style formation with Kerrigan and Jason Johnson (Sr., Geneseo, Ill., Industrial Technology) doing most of the work. Kerrigan had 23 punts for a 40.0 yard average, while Johnson kicked 11 times for a clip of 36.7 yards.

Jacob Batterson (Sr., Eddyville, Iowa, Industrial Technology) took ten kickoffs back for an average of 22.6 yards (long of 51 yards), while Joel Medina had seven punt returns for a clip of 11.4 yards (long of 40 yards).

William Penn, which is picked to finish third in the MWL, had 20 all-league selections in 2012, including three first-teamers.

ST. FRANCIS (IND.) PROFILE: Kevin Donley is in his 35th year as a collegiate head coach and his 16th at St. Francis (Ind.). Entering this campaign, he is 263-119-1 overall (149-34 at USF).

Donley has led the Cougars to incredible success, highlighted by ten Mideast League titles and three national championship game appearances. He was the NAIA Coach of the Year in 2004 and broke the NAIA’s all-time coaching wins record in 2012.

He has also coached at Anderson, Georgetown (Ky.), and California (Pa.), leading Georgetown to the national title in 1991.

A 1973 graduate of Anderson, he received his master’s of education from Ball State in 1980.

The Cougars, who are picked to win the MSFA’s Mideast League, closed out 2012 with a 45-34 FCS quarterfinal loss to eventual national champion Marian (Ind.).

Austin Coleman highlighted the game for USF with his NAIA-record eighth career kickoff return touchdown.

David Yoder was 25-for-42 for 278 yards, while Antoin Campbell rushed for 57 yards. Coleman also caught five passes for 72 yards. Marian outgained St. Francis (Ind.) 393-362.

For the 2012 season, St. Francis (Ind.) averaged 34.8 points and 397.1 yards per game, including 227.2 passing and 169.9 rushing.

Brody Kalbaugh had a squad-best 105 tackles. Kory Stamps intercepted four passes, which was good for sixth in the NAIA, and Zach Bruce had five sacks.

Emerson Ueber was 6-of-8 in field goals and made 44-of-52 extra points. Kollin Carman was even more successful, though, as his 44.6 yard punt average led the NAIA.

Coleman was one of the best return men in the nation with a 29.1 kick return average over 33 attempts. He led all NAIA players with 969 kick return yards and was fifth in average.

Aaron Knight also managed 11.6 yards per punt return.

COACH HAFNER SAYS: On the Bethel (Tenn.) Game: “It was a great game played by our team. I thought we executed very well on both sides of the ball against a very good team.”

On the Off Week: “The off week allowed us to take our time with some fundamentals and installing our game plan for St. Francis. Much like week one, our players are tired of practicing against each other and are ready for another game.”

On St. Francis (Ind.): “St. Francis is very strong football team with some great returning players. It was a great game played in Oskaloosa last year and we would expect nothing but that this Saturday. With this being their first game, there are some question marks for us, but we will approach it much like the Bethel game and be ready to make any needed adjustments.”
