Oskaloosa Rotary Club Announces Second Annual Pedal for Polio

Pedal For Polio

Pedal For Polio

Oskaloosa – April 9, 2013 – The Oskaloosa Rotary Club is sponsoring its second annual Pedal for Polio event and registration is open. After completing the trailhead Gazebo last year, Rotarians created this event to raise funds for the signature Rotary International program, End Polio Now. Our world is 99% Polio free but the fight is not over.

The Second Annual Pedal for Polio will be held on Saturday, May 4th. Pre-ride registration will guarantee you receive a water bottle and wrist band, but is not required. Same day registration opens at 8 a.m. at the Rotary Gateway Gazebo. “We will send bikers off from the Gazebo at 9 am,” said Doug Mills, Club President. “We look forward to helping our community prepare for the big ride coming up later this summer.”

Mahaska Community Recreation Foundation (MCRF) volunteers have graciously offered to have a tram available for anyone who would like to participate but who is unable to ride. You must register in advance for the trail tours and space is limited.

Bikers will receive a water bottle and a wrist band. Registration fees are $10 per individual and $20 per family (with a limit of 2 water bottles).

All proceeds from the event will be donated to Polio Plus, the Rotary International campaign to end Polio. In the 1980s, polio infected more than 350,000 children annually. In 2009, there were less than 1,700 cases of Polio reported worldwide. The polio cases represented by that final 1% are the most difficult and expensive to prevent.
