Des Moines. Harry “Butch” Hewitt, 65, of Des Moines, died Saturday, April 6, 2013, at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines.
Butch was born October 17, 1947, at Iowa City, Iowa, the son of Harry and Lois Greiner Hewitt. He graduated from the Oskaloosa High School with the class of 1966. He was recruited and signed with New York Yankees right out of high school to play catcher for three years. In 1969, he was drafted by the United States Army and was discharged in 1974. On July 23, 1974, he was united in marriage to Peggy Wells at Omaha, Nebraska. He completed training at the police academy, and took a position as a police officer for the Newton Police Department. His law enforcement career brought him back to Mahaska County where he served as a Deputy for the Sherriff Department; he went on to serve as the administrator of the Southeast Iowa Drug Taskforce, and lastly for the Des Moines Police Department retiring from there in 2009. He will be remembered for his great sense of humor. His family was the center of his life. He loved animals. He also enjoyed traveling with Peggy. He was a member of the American Legion.
His family includes his wife of over 38 years, Peggy Hewitt of Des Moines; two children and their spouses, Tim and Nicole Hewitt of Lock Haven, Pennsylvania and Julie and Eric Brown of Fargo, North Dakota; three grandchildren, Lyndsey and Heather Hewitt, and McKinley Brown; his father in law, Jack Welch of Oskaloosa; sister and brother in law, Nancy and Steve Vance of Ankeny; an aunt, Cris Utterback of Sigourney; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his mother in law, Beulah Welch; a niece, Brandy Taylor; and a great niece, Nikkole Taylor.
Graveside memorial services and burial will be held Thursday, April 11, 2013, at 11 a.m. in the Forest Cemetery in Oskaloosa. Graveside military rites will be given by members of the Oskaloosa American Legion and V.F.W.
A procession will form at 10:40 a.m. Thursday morning at the Bates Funeral Chapel for those wishing to go to the cemetery. As was Butch’s wish his body has been cremated.
No visitation is planned.
