William Penn Falls to St. Ambrose in MCC Opener
Davenport–The Lady Statesmen basketball team failed in both manufacturing much offense and in slowing down their red-hot foes in an 87-59 Midwest Collegiate Conference-opening loss to St. Ambrose Saturday.
William Penn (9-7, 0-1 MCC) had its three-game winning streak snapped as it was doubled up in shooting 57.4%-28.6%.
The visitors never owned an advantage, and despite being outshot 58.1%-34.3% in the first 20 minutes, were only down 40-29 at the break. They unfortunately never narrowed the deficit to single digits in the second half.
Janay Pritchett (So., Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Biology) guided the navy and gold with 18 points, including a 7-of-8 showing at the free-throw line. The charity stripe was one of the squad’s few bright spots Saturday as it finished 18-of-25 (72.0%).
Sam Abens (Jr., Knoxville, Iowa, Physical Education) also reached double figures with 13 points in addition to a team-high eight rebounds. Katie Golomski (So., Milwaukee, Wis., Psychology) was also productive, adding nine points on 3-of-5 three-point shooting.
The Lady Statesmen committed one fewer turnover (14-15) than the Queen Bees (14-2, 2-0 MCC), but lost the battle of the glass 43-34.
“We were not here at all today,” Head Coach Mike Brown said. “They were the better team, but we did not do much to stop them. We have to do something to prove our desire to be a league contender.”
Next: William Penn remains on the road Wednesday, traveling to Des Moines to face AIB in MCC play at 5:30 p.m.
