Two trucks a day are shipping mail out of the Oskaloosa Post Office to the central post office in Des Moines until Christmas. The postal service added an extra truck to pick up mail in Oskaloosa last week to keep up with the volume of mail over the holidays.

Postmaster Sue Witt says two trucks will continue to help with the mail shipments until Christmas. Witt says she likes working with the customers who are waiting patiently to send their packages. Witt says she and her employees are handling thousands of pieces of mail every day.

“People still mail packages. Yes, e-mail, we probably don’t have as many cards because people do do the cards on e-mail, but we are extremely busy, actually have been all month” says Sue Witt.

Witt says December 10th was the peak day for mailing cards. The U.S. Postal Service reports the busiest mailing date of all for any type of mail including packages was this past Monday, December 17th. Nationwide, the postal service handled 658 million pieces of mail that day. The Oskaloosa Post Office does not have specific numbers for that day or others this holiday season.

Witt says she doesn’t see much of a difference in the mail volume in Oskaloosa this year compared to past years.
