Oskaloosa, December 4, 2012 – The Mahaska County YMCA Dolphins Swim Team began its home season schedule in grand fashion on Saturday, December 1, hosting YMCA teams from Centerville, Creston, Marion, and Ottumwa. Boasting one of the larger participant numbers in recent memory, the meet had 234 swimmers among the five participating teams. With an 11am start time, the meet continued on throughout the day and into the early evening, until all the swimmers crossed their respective finish lines in the 106 events.

This year’s Mahaska County YMCA Dolphins squad consists of 77 swimmers, a large majority of them returning as veterans with a number of seasons under their belts. For a section of the team, this home meet on December 1 was the first competitive action of the year. Coach Janet Reese commented, “I and the rest of the Dolphins coaching staff are excited to see just how far this year’s swimmers can progress throughout the season. If this first home meet is any indication, there are great things to come for this year’s Dolphins.”

For those not wanting to miss out on all the swimming action, the final two home meets hosted by the Mahaska County YMCA will be December 15 and January 12. These dates will see a wide variety of participants from all across the state, with the Mahaska County YMCA playing host to the Riverfront YMCA (Des Moines) on December 15, and swim teams from the Marshalltown and Newton YMCAs on January 12. Executive Director Dawn Collins said, “The Dolphins Swim Team is an exciting opportunity for the youth of Mahaska County to stay fit and healthy, and hosting home meets here in Oskaloosa benefits the community and the YMCA.”
