John Henry Howar

Overland Park, Kansas. John Howar, 85, of Overland Park, Kansas and formerly of Birmingham, Alabama, died Wednesday, April 18, 2012 in Overland Park. He was born Saturday, March 5, 1927, the son of Henry St. Clair Howar and Anna M. Sonnenfeldt-Howar in Chicago, Illinois. Following high school graduation he entered the military. He served in the U.S. Army for 22 years and was a Korean War Veteran. During his military career, he was involved in activities with the US Army Air Corps, and US Army Corps of Engineers, attended the University of Illinois, and was served duty stations within the United States, Asia, and Europe. Early in his military carreer, he was united in marriage to Eleanor Howar and she died on May 28, 1996. After retirement from the Army on July 22, 1966, he worked at U.S. Pipe and Foundry in Birmingham, Alabama and other foundries in the Birmingham area, and was also involved in foundry refractory sales until his retirement. He enjoyed flying and was a member of the Civil Air Patrol and the Zamora Temple in Birmingham. In March of 2009 he relocated to Overland Park to be closer to his son.

He is survived by his second wife: Dorothy Howar of Little Rock, Arkansas; a son: Michael (& Karin) Howar of Overland Park, Kansas; 3 daughters: Charlotte (& Gary) Anderson of Spokane, Washington, Kathy (& Joe) Briggs of Great Falls, Montana, Laura Parker of Palm Harbor, Florida; his three grandchildren who he dearly loved; James Briggs, Jessica Briggs and Brenden Howar and a sister Norma Fernbach in Rici, Missouri.

He was preceded in death by his first wife: Eleanor Howar; his parents; and one sister: Betty Weiman.

Graveside funeral services and burial will be held Monday, April 23, 2012 at 10 AM in Forest Cemetery in Oskaloosa, Iowa. Graveside Military Rites will be given by members of the Oskaloosa American Legion and V.F.W. A procession will form at the Bates Funeral Chapel in Oskaloosa at 9:30 a.m. for those wishing to attend the graveside service. Visitation will be held Sunday after 2 PM at Bates Funeral Chapel in Oskaloosa, Iowa with the family present at the funeral home from 2 – 5 PM to greet friends and relatives. Bates Funeral Chapel in Oskaloosa, Iowa is in charge of the arrangements. Memorials in lieu of flowers may be made to Alzheimers Association or Kansas City Hospice.
