Doris Kathleen Curtis, 87, of Richland died Sunday, April 1, 2012, at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City. She was born Tuesday, March 24, 1925, at Ottumwa, Iowa the daughter of Otis B. and Gertrude Miller Sipes. She was raised in the Ollie area and graduated from Ollie Consolidated School with the class of 1942. Following school she worked as a department manager at A & P Grocery Store in Des Moines. She then attended Ottumwa School of Beauty. Following her graduation she worked at Merrill Beauty Salon in Oskaloosa for several years. On August 17, 1947, she was united in marriage to (Raymond) Virgil Curtis at the Methodist Church in Lancaster, Missouri. Together they farmed in the Ollie area for many years. In 1982 they moved to Richland when ill health forced Virgil’s retirement from farming. She was a past officer of the Hedrick Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star, a member of the Ollie Chapter of the Eastern Star, a member of the Oskaloosa White Shrine and Ollie Methodist Church. She will be remembered as a devoted wife and mother. Doris dearly loved baking (especially pies, cakes, cookies and candies) and fishing was her favorite pastime. She enjoyed caring for her garden and flowers and most enjoyed her grandchildren and going to their activities. Doris’ family includes her husband of over 64 years: Virgil Curtis of Richland; 4 daughters: Janice (& Robert) Anderson of Wayland, Iowa, Elaine (& Craig) Woosley of Bloomfield, Cheryl (& Edward) Loring of North Port, Florida, and Linda O’Rourke of Osprey, Florida; 8 grandchildren: Emily and Kevin Anderson, April and Sara Woosley, Brandi and Brandon Loring and Julie and Joe O’Rourke, Jr. and 6 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and an infant daughter: Patrice Curtis. Funeral services will be held Thursday, April 5, 2012, at 11:00 a.m. in the Fremont Funeral Chapel in Fremont, Iowa with Reverend David Peterson officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Lawn Cemetery. Visitation will be held Thursday from 10 a.m. until service time with family present to greet friends and relatives. Memorials may be made to the Richland 1st Responders, Mercy Hospice Care in Iowa City or to a charity of the donor’s choice.
