Goldsmith, Team Take Silver at AIB

Panora–Shane Goldsmith (Fr., Benoni, South Africa, St. Dunstans College) and the Statesmen linksters were both on the verge of something big this weekend, but unfortunately each fell a bit short of their goals at the AIB Spring Invitational Friday and Saturday.
William Penn finished second out of nine teams with a final tally of 626 (315-311) at the par-72 Lake Panorama National Golf Course. It is the team’s second runner-up finish this spring.
Central White rallied past the navy and gold on Saturday with a score of 303 to win by seven shots (316-303–619). Drew Osier of Central completed the sweep as he won medalist honors with a 148 (75-73).
Goldsmith relinquished his Friday advantage as well (up two strokes after shooting 73), finishing in second at 149 (73-76).
Adriaan de Villiers (Jr., Akasia, South Africa, Akasia HS) struggled on the first day with an 82, but responded very positively by shooting the lowest round of the tourney at 71 to finish fourth (153).
Byron Lindeque (Fr., Boksburg, South Africa, Christian Brothers College) was next as he tied for 14th at 160 (79-81).
Geoff Dammann (Jr., Wyoming, Midland HS), in a tie for 27th at 164 (81-83), and Evan Thomas (Sr., Oskaloosa, Oskaloosa HS), in a tie for 34th at 167 (84-83), were a bit further back in the field.
Will Poterek (Sr., Lee, Ill., Indian Creek HS) and Jordan Krulik (Jr., Chanhassen, Minn., Minnetonka HS) also represented William Penn in individual play. Poterek was 39th at 172 (86-86) and Krulik was 43rd at 175 (89-86).
Next: William Penn closes out its season next weekend by competing in the Midwest Collegiate Conference Championships Friday and Saturday. Play will be contested at Blue Top Ridge Golf Course. The tournament champion earns the league’s automatic bid to the NAIA Women’s Golf National Championships in May.
