Oskaloosa nears new snow ordiance
Oskaloosa is now one reading away from a 48 hour snow ordinance. At last weeks city council meeting, the Oskaloosa City Council approved the 2nd reading of the ordinance putting it only one reading away from finally being approved. The new ordinance would allow residents up to 48 hours to remove snow after a snowstorm. The current ordinance allows for only 24 hours after a storm.
This ordinance change has not, however, come without criticism. Several residents have spoken against this issue and all have seemed to echo the same thing: it will be an even bigger inconvenience to residents who have to walk. At all of the meetings, this ordiance has either passed with a 4-3 vote or has been delayed due to a 3-3 vote. City Council rules require that if an item receives a 3-3 vote, it is automatically placed on the next meetings agenda.
In other news, the city council:
- swore in Tyler C. Hunt as a new police officer
- approved several new ordinances in their 1st reading
- received a report from the Central Iowa Transportation Coalition
- went into closed session under Iowa Code Section 21.5.1.j to discuss the purchase of real estate
The next meeting of the Oskaloosa City Council will be on September 20th at 6:30 pm in the city council chambers.
