2020-2021 William Penn Shotgun Sports Preview
The new kids on the block will also make the loudest noise and hope to make a resounding impact at William Penn as the shotgun sports era begins in 2020-2021.
Head Coach Steve Heaton has spent the past year recruiting individuals to fill the inaugural men’s and women’s rosters and is excited to begin the campaigns with a very William Penn look–a diverse mix of both Iowa and out-of-state talent.
Team members will compete in upwards of seven different disciplines, including American Skeet, American Trap, Sporting Clays, Doubles Skeet, Doubles Trap, International Skeet, and Bunker Trap.
On the men’s side, area talents Maclane Heinen (Fr., Pella, Iowa, Pella Christian HS) and Gideon Boender (Fr., Oskaloosa, Iowa, Pella Christian HS) look to be productive in their first collegiate seasons. Both excelled at the state level, while Heinen also found success nationally.
Heaton hopes that Bryon Baca (Jr., Colorado Springs, Colo.) and Christopher Berkshire-Lewis (So., Kansas City, Mo.) will bring much-needed experience to the navy and gold as both transfer in from Concordia (Neb.).
John Anderson (So., Morrison, Ill.) and Quinton Casteel (Jr., Moravia, Iowa) move over from other WPU athletics teams, while Jarrett DeKoning (Fr., Grinnell, Iowa), Hunter Lucas (So., Washington, Iowa), and Hunter Shives (Fr., Knoxville, Iowa) will add depth to William Penn’s squad.
Breale McFarland (Fr., Rio Rancho, N.M.) is hoping for a big collegiate career for the women after earning high marks as a prep. Madison Hutchings (Fr., Herriman, Utah) and Kali Smith (So., Grinnell, Iowa) will join her to comprise a small, but formidable women’s team.
Schedule/Conference
WPU begins the first-ever campaign Saturday and Sunday at the Midland Ice Out in Lincoln, Neb. The squad will also compete in-state several times with the top fall event coming in early November at the ACUI-Upper Midwest-Virtual Championship in Nebraska.
The Statesmen will battle a few more times in the spring, including the ACUI Conference Championship and ACUI National Championship in March.
