Chuck Russell: An Oskaloosa Legend

Chuck Russell

Oskaloosa residents came to pay their final respects to local resident and historian Chuck Russell today. Chuck was a major activist of historical preservation. Chuck was instrumental in the renovation of several local landmarks including the bandstand as well as the Chief Mahaska Statue. As a member of the historical preservation commission, Chuck loved historical preservation. His “A While Ago” pieces in the Oskaloosa Herald were always loved and many people looked forward to those each week. I was saddened to learn of the loss of Mr. Russell this week. Chuck was very helpful when I was developing a historical downtown tour of Oskaloosa. It is because of Chuck that I have an interest in historical preservation.

However, even with the loss of Chuck we must continue to preserve Oskaloosa’s history. It is important that we continue to do this, even if we have lost a person very instrumental in it. Oskaloosa is rich with history and we must continue restore our buildings. Chuck will be missed in this community. While he may not be here to read this, I commend Chuck as well as his family for their hard work in restoring Oskaloosa’s history. Without him, we could not have done it.
