Seniors spark Central volleyball victory

PELLA — Spearheaded by its three-member senior class, the Central College volleyball team secured a four-set victory against Loras College Saturday night, 18-25, 25-16, 25-18, 26-24.

The Dutch (2-2, 2-2 American Rivers Conference) handed the Duhawks (4-1, 4-1 conference) their first defeat of the season. It is also their first win against Loras since 2016.

Kayleigh Fite (senior, middle hitter, Florissant, Mo., Trinity Catholic HS) unleashed a career-high 20 kills, yielding a .318 hitting percentage. She also had 14 digs for her second double-double of the season.

“I couldn’t be happier for her because I know she’s earned it,” coach Jeanne Czipri said. “It’s a great way for her to celebrate her four years here.”

It was also a career night for classmate Ally Focht (senior, right-side hitter, Stanton), who put down 10 kills on 24 attempts. The third member of the senior class, DaLana Kron (defensive specialist, West Branch) added nine digs and two service aces.

“Ally has been one of the most coachable athletes I’ve had the pleasure of coaching,” Czipri said. “I’m not surprised because of how hard she’s worked for four years. Her teammates love playing for her.

“DaLana played a big role tonight. She had some really well-placed serves and passed extremely well.”

Outside hitter Krissa Larson (junior, Waverly, Waverly-Shell Rock HS) was in double figures with 13 kills and a .278 hitting percentage. Gracie Daniels (freshman, outside hitter, Broken Arrow, Okla.) chipped in nine more kills and Hallie Uhlig (junior, middle hitter, Colorado Springs, Colo., Palmer Ridge HS) had eight.

“Krissa had a good night,” Czipri said. “Hallie started to come alive.”

Landry Luhring (junior, Grundy Center) contributed a career-high 37 digs from the libero spot and Amanda Smith (sophomore, setter, Tipton) had 50 assists.

“Things are starting to click for Landry,” Czipri said. “She helped us play well defensively and she helped motivate us offensively with her digs.”

The Dutch are set to host Buena Vista University Wednesday at 8 p.m.
