Joyce Ann Hintermeister
December 15, 1937 – June 29, 2021
Grinnell (Malcom), Iowa | Age 83

Joyce Hintermeister, age 83 of Grinnell and formerly of Malcom, Iowa passed away peacefully on Tuesday, June 29, 2021 at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City. Joyce Ann Hintermeister, the daughter of William and Lucy (Morgan) Smith, was born on December 15, 1937 in Muscatine, Iowa.

Joyce graduated from Muscatine High School in 1955.

Joyce met her husband, Gene Hintermeister, on a blind double-date at the movies. When Joyce told the story of meeting Gene, she said she remembered Gene saying that “I was just what he wanted”, adding “and he was just what I wanted”. They were united in marriage on January 15, 1955 in the Grace Lutheran Church in Keokuk, Iowa. To this union, three children were born, Carmela, Timothy, and Kevin.

Joyce was a homemaker and farmer’s wife where they farmed in the Poweshiek and Tama county areas. Eventually, Gene’s desire for a farm of his own brought the family to the rural town of Deep River, Iowa. On their first visit to Deep River, Joyce thought it felt like “the other side of the world”, a far cry from their busy life in Muscatine. Luckily, as someone who always enjoyed the outdoors, Joyce soon adapted to life on the farm. She worked in the fields with her husband until the children arrived home from school, heading inside to fix them a snack and then bringing them (along with their toys) back out to the fields to play until suppertime. Joyce was also a waitress at Malzuma and the Marshalltown Sale Barn, but most importantly she was a farmer’s wife. Gene and Joyce bought a farmstead in 1971 near Malcom. The family also established a trucking dispatch company, The Yellow Rose, coordinating shipping from California all the way to Pennsylvania.

Her family was very important to her and she always looked forward to family reunions and other family gatherings. The family enjoyed outings to state fairs, family picnics, and in general just “being among the people”. Joyce loved arts and crafts and attended many area craft shows over the years. A self-taught sewer, she took great pride in the craftsmanship of her work, her motto being “quality over quantity”. She also enjoyed playing bingo, word search games, going to the casino, and playing solitaire on her Kindle. Most importantly, she loved spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Joyce was a wonderful mother, grandmother, and great grandmother and was loved by many people. She will be truly missed by her family and many friends.

Her legacy will be honored by her children: Carmela (& Larry) Tuttle of Belle Plaine, Tim Hintermeister of Grinnell, and Kevin (& Wendy) Hintermeister of Toledo; her four grandchildren: Kristyn (& Ron) Van Nevel of Belle Plaine, Brian (& Jillian) Tuttle of Williamsburg, Vincent (& fiance, Destiny Cherveny) Hintermeister of Toledo, and Wyatt Hintermeister of Toledo; her four great grandchildren: Brandon Van Nevel, Lance (& Sarah Malfese, girlfriend) Van Nevel, Cael Tuttle and Lucy Tuttle; along with many other relatives and friends.

Joyce was preceded in death by her parents; and her husband, Gene Hintermeister in July 2018.
