Inmate Death at United States Penitentiary – Administrative Maximum in Florence, CO

Florence, CO: On Monday, November 13, 2017, at approximately 10:15 a.m., staff at the United States Penitentiary-Administrative Maximum (ADX) in Florence, Colorado, discovered inmate Jamie McMahan unresponsive in his cell. Staff immediately called for assistance and began life-saving measures. Additionally, Emergency Medical Services (EMS) were requested, and life-saving efforts continued. Mr. McMahan was pronounced dead at approximately 10:30 a.m. by institution medical staff.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation was notified, and the incident is being investigated as an apparent suicide. Next of kin has been notified.

Mr. McMahan was a 42-year-old male who arrived at ADX Florence on September 29, 2005, to continue serving a life sentence for motor vehicle theft by violence resulting in death and armed bank robbery resulting in death.

ADX Florence is an administrative security facility that houses approximately 420 male offenders in Florence, Colorado.

McMahan pled guilty in 1998 to the murder of Barbara Garber and Island Schultz, as well as robbing a bank in Gibson Iowa.

The 1997 crime spree spawned a nationwide manhunt for McMahan and Chris Kauffman, who was ultimately captured in Florida. They had been spotted after the pair was featured on a television program.
