Elizabeth Van Zante, 96, of Oskaloosa, Iowa and formerly of Eddyville, passed away Sunday morning, October 20, 2013, at Mahaska Health Partnership in Oskaloosa.
Elizabeth Van Zante, daughter of Gerrit and Alice Hoksbergen Van Heukelom, was born June 8, 1917, at Leighton, Iowa. She attended Centennial Country Grade School in Leighton. At an early age she made profession of her faith at Third Reformed Church in Pella. She graduated from Pella High School in 1934 and graduated with a B.A. degree from Central College in 1943. She taught at Albia and Washington, Iowa high schools.
Elizabeth was united in marriage to Elmer Roy Van Zante on February 10, 1948, at Third Reformed Church in Pella. They made their home on the Van Zante home place south of Eddyville, where Elmer was born and raised. They farmed and Elizabeth assisted her husband, Elmer, with recordkeeping and homemaking. She was a communicant member, Sunday School teacher, and Bible Study leader at Central Reformed Church in Oskaloosa.
Those left to honor her memory are her two sons and a daughter and their families: Arlin and Donna Van Zante of rural Eddyville, Loren and Rhonda Van Zante of rural Eddyville, and Beth and Randall Brostrom of rural Oskaloosa; eight grandchildren: Michelle (Tom) DeBruin, Seth (Jennifer) Van Zante, Paul Van Zante, Joshua (Amanda) Van Zante, Kristin (Brian) Borcherding, Cara (Christopher) Okerberg, Renee (Christopher) Egan and Haley Brostrom; ten great-grandchildren: Mark and John DeBruin, Ephraim, Emmet, Eden and Eliza Van Zante, Caleb and Sarah Rose Van Zante, Ellie Mae Borcherding and Evelyn Okerberg; and two sisters: Margery (Reuben) Van Hemert of Pella, Iowa and Alda Hoekstra of Cherokee, Iowa.
In addition to her parents, Elizabeth was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, Elmer in January 2013, a brother, Louis Van Heukelom, and two sisters, Nellie Kolenbrander and Jeanette Van Zante.
Funeral services for Elizabeth will be held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, October 23, 2013, at the Central Reformed Church in Oskaloosa with Pastor Gloria Nollen officiating. A family prayer service will be held at 10:45 in the west wing of the church sanctuary.
Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery near Leighton, Iowa.
Visitation will begin at 10 a.m., Tuesday at Garland-Van Arkel-Langkamp Funeral Chapel; the family will be present from 5-7 p.m. to greet visitors.
