Donald “Donnie” Young, 72, of Montezuma passed away Thursday, April 15, 2021, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City, Iowa. Donald Wesley Young was born on October 15, 1948, in Oskaloosa, IA, to Dorothy Lowe and Milton Young.

Donnie graduated from Montezuma High School in 1966. He attended Kirkwood college to study computer science for one year before being drafted into the army. He served in Germany for two years.

Donnie married the love of his life Cherie on March 27, 1971, at the First Baptist Church in Oskaloosa, IA. They lived in Barnes City until 2004 when they moved to Montezuma, where they had plenty of room for horses and fun to be had. Together they had three children: Justin, Preston (& Connie), and Austin (& Taren) of Montezuma.

Donnie owned his own trucking business Don Young Trucking until 1985 and professionally drove a truck until he took on the role of full-time Grandpa at the age of 64.

Those blessed to call him Papa Donnie are: Brittany (& Kyle), Stevie (& Damian), Jordan, Isaiah (& Molly), Westen, Willow, Charley, Macy, Kayl, Beau, Jaxon, Gracie, and Ty; and great-granddaughter, Shayde.

Donnie loved his family. He never missed a chance to give his grandkids a ride anywhere they needed to go. He loved to be there cheering them on from the sidelines at every sporting event.

Donnie enjoyed attending auctions and sales, gifting the knives from his collection to us all, mowing with his grandsons, riding horses, meeting up with friends at coffee time to chat, and giving many, many Ranger rides.
