WPU Wins SCTP State Sporting Clays, Finishes Second in Skeet
Oskaloosa–The William Penn shotgun sports teams overcame extreme conditions to bring home serious hardware Saturday as it competed in the Iowa SCTP Collegiate State Skeet and Sporting Clays Championship.
The Statesmen won the Sporting Clays competition with a score of 236 (top three individual tallies made up team score). The navy and gold nearly completed the sweep, falling just short in Skeet at 283; Iowa Central CC won the event with one more target at 284. A total of 12 teams were in the competition.
Christopher Berkshire-Lewis (So., Kansas City, Mo., Business Management) and Bryon Baca (Jr., Colorado Springs, Colo.) guided William Penn in Sporting Clays as each went 80-for-100. Maclane Heinen (Fr., Pella, Iowa, Business Management) tied for seventh at 76-for-100.
Berkshire-Lewis and Baca were then pitted against each other in a shoot-off with Berkshire-Lewis coming out on top for the Sporting Clays individual crown.
Among females, Madison Hutchings (Fr., Herriman, Utah, Business Management) placed fourth, missing a medal by just two targets, while Breale McFarland (Fr., Rio Rancho, N.M., Education) finished 16th.
Heinen then topped the navy and gold in Skeet at 97-for-100, tying for third place overall. Berkshire-Lewis tied for seventh at 96-for-100, while Hunter Lucas (So., Washington, Iowa) ended up 19th at 90-for-100.
Quinton Casteel (Jr., Moravia, Iowa, Biology), in 30th, Baca, in 35th, and Jarrett DeKoning (Jr., Grinnell, Iowa, Public Accounting and Business Management), in 43rd, also finished high for the Statesmen.
McFarland posted a new personal best to lead the ladies as her 89-for-100 put her in fifth. Hutchings ended up 19th on the women’s side.
“After a very long, wet, windy, and cold day, I could not be happier as a coach on how our athletes kept pushing each other through the toughest conditions,” Head Coach Steve Heaton said. “This team does nothing but impress me with every practice and competition they have. I cannot wait until our fall season with this team and the talented recruits coming in! I have a feeling this team is just getting started on showing what they can and will do in the future! They proved once again that they win as a team and the individual scores take care of themselves!”
Next Up: William Penn concludes its inaugural season Saturday by traveling to Ackley to compete in the SCTP College State Trap competition.
