Cedar Rapids–An early goal by the opposition was not answered as the William Penn men’s soccer team fell 1-0 to #2 seed Mount Mercy in the semifinals of the Midwest Collegiate Conference Tournament Sunday.

The sixth-seeded Statesmen (8-10-1) were only outshot 13-10, but managed just one shot on goal by Mark Dryden (Jr., Arbroath, Scotland, Biology).

The Mustangs (12-6-2) recorded the lone goal of the day at the 7:39 mark and the advantage held up. They now advance to meet top-seeded Grand View in the championship match Wednesday in Des Moines.

Four William Penn players finished with two shots apiece, including Brandon Nicholson (Cedar Falls, Iowa, Physical Education). He was joined by Jeff Kelly (Ottumwa, Iowa, Business Management), Tim McHawes (Oskaloosa, Iowa), Aaron Rose (Ottumwa, Iowa, Industrial Technology), and Mark DeRee (Wichita, Kan.) as seniors who saw their collegiate careers end with the loss.

Mason Bandy (So., Calgary, Alberta, Biology) recorded four saves Sunday.
