LINCOLN, NEB. — An early 1-0 deficit was not too big of a hill for the Central College women’s soccer team to climb, thanks in large part to forward Erin Manion’s (sophomore, Delafield, Wis., Kettle Moraine HS) two goals in a 2-1 win over Nebraska Wesleyan University Saturday.

In the process, Central moves to 12-2-1 and 3-1-1 in Iowa Conference play.

The Prairie Wolves (4-9-1-, 1-5-0 IIAC) struck at the nine-minute mark to take the 1-0 lead.

“They caught us on our heels after an injury restart,” coach Mike Kobylinski said. “Defensively, we’ve got to be more aware. I was happy with how we responded.”

It took all of four minutes for Manion to score the equalizer, as she went alone for an unassisted goal. Manion hit season goal No. 10 in the second half to find the final scoring margin of 2-1.

“Erin had two clinical finishes,” Kobylinski said. “She played extremely well.”

Kobylinski was especially pleased with his team’s performance at the end of the match.

“We closed the game out well in the last eight minutes,” he said. “We really understood the game plan and kept the ball in the corners. Good teams close game out and we did that today.”

Midfielder Lauren Vahlkamp (junior, Quincy, Ill., Notre Dame HS) was credited for an assist on Manion’s second goal. Kobylinski also cited fellow midfielder Felicia Roppe (senior, Council Bluffs, St. Albert HS) for being a “spark plug off the bench.”

Defensively, Kayla Dowell (senior, Cedar Falls) and Lauryn Kramer (junior, Cedar Falls) continued their stellar play.

“Kayla had another unbelievable performance at left back,” Kobylinski said “She’s really playing well. Lauryn was a stud, she won every single ball.”

Central returns home Wednesday for a 2:30 p.m. match against Buena Vista University with sights set on another three points in the league standings with a victory.

“One more win should probably get us in the postseason tournament,” Kobylinski said.
