Four Central men picked for all-region soccer squads

PELLA — Eclipsing a school record for the most players to be recognized for the honor, the Central College men’s soccer team landed four players on the United Soccer Coaches All-North Region squads released Monday.

Senior defender and the American Rivers Conference defensive MVP Taylor Petkovich (Littleton Colo., Heritage HS) was selected to the first team, becoming just the third first team selection in program history.

Freshman midfielder Nick Ashton (Ankeny, Centennial HS) was placed on the second team while senior goalkeeper Andrew Mathys (senior, Elburn, Ill., Kaneland HS) and freshman forward Charlie Pritchard (Ankeny) were both third team selections.

Petkovich anchored a backline that allowed just 24 goals in 20 games, including seven shutouts. Logging 1,567 minutes, Petkovich had six assists and a goal of his own for Central on the offensive end.

Ashton had one goal and five assists for Central this year and was second on the team with 35 shot attempts.

Mathys had six solo shutouts in goal for the Dutch. He made 66 saves while facing 223 shots, registering a goals against average of 1.17.

Pritchard led the team with 24 points (nine goals, six assists) and was tied for the lead in goals scored. Four of his nine goals were game-winning efforts.

The American Rivers Conference had six other male players chosen.

Central finished the season 14-4-2 (6-1-1) and won the American Rivers Conference title. The team also appeared in its first-ever NCAA Division III Championships game.
