LINCOLN, NEB. — A second-half goal from defender Logan Serbousek (freshman, Cedar Rapids, Prairie HS) wasn’t enough as the Central College men’s soccer team fell Saturday at Nebraska Wesleyan University 2-1.

Though the result did not end in the positive direction, Central (9-4-0, 2-3-0 conference) played impressively well according to coach Garry Laidlaw.

“I thought we played terrific for 95% of the game tonight,” he said. “Our effort and attitude was tremendous. Unfortunately, soccer is an unforgiving games and we missed our assignments at the back post twice and it resulted in goals both times.”

Nebraska Wesleyan got both of its tallies from forward Alex Day.

“In these games, especially as tight as things are in the Iowa Conference, we have to learn we can’t make those mistakes,” Laidlaw said.

Central outshot the Prairie Wolves (9-5-1, 4-2-0 IIAC) 12-9 and had six shots on goal compared to four Nebraska Wesleyan. Seven shot attempts for the Dutch came in the first half.

“The wind was definitely a factor,” Laidlaw said. “We had at it our back in the first half and didn’t take advantage. The wind increased in the second half and it was extremely windy.”

Serbousek used his head to put a ball into the back of the net off the foot of midfielder Salvador Villaneuva (senior, Morris, Ill.) with 18 minutes remaining.

“Logan had a brave header,” Laidlaw said. “That kind of commitment is going to take us far in the future.”

Central split its conference matches this week after beating Dubuque 1-0 on Wednesday, Central’s first win over the Spartans since 2008. After only scoring two goals in two matches, the Dutch will be working on offense this week at practice.

“We have to show a little more commitment around the box,” Laidlaw said.

A home match against Buena Vista University awaits Central on Wednesday at noon.
