Cross Country Tallies Third-Place Finishes

Davenport–The Statesmen cross country teams competed in the St. Ambrose Invitational Saturday.

The William Penn men’s team finished in third place out of five total teams. St. Ambrose took the team title with a total score of 30, outscoring the second-place team by seven points. William Penn scored 72 points with a total time of two hours, 29 minutes, and 45 seconds.

The top placer for William Penn was Ruben Perez-Rodriguez (So., San Antonio, Texas, Business Management) who ran a time of 29:11 to finish in eighth out of 56 total runners. Following closely behind was Jonah Heckenberg (So., Stockport, Iowa, Business Management) who finished roughly 12 seconds after his fellow Statesmen to capture 11th place.

William De Jesus (Jr., Homestead, Fla., Biology) crossed the finish line in just under 30 minutes to capture 15th place as well as being the third Statesmen to cross the finish line. Next up for the navy and gold was Isaac Knockel (So., New Sharon, Iowa, Pre-Professional Biology) and Ethan Varvelo (Fr., Channelview, Texas, Engineering) who finished in 20th and 21st place, respectively, to complete the team scoring for the Statesmen.

The women’s team also took third place out of five teams with 73 points, only five points out of finishing in the runner-up spot. Mount Mercy took the team crown with a total score of 16 points. Leading the charge for William Penn was Delana Jordan (Jr., Addison, Texas, Business Management) who finished with a time of 22:41 for a 14th-place finish.

Following closely behind the lead mark was Michaela Kmiec (Jr., Centerville, Texas, Exercise Science) and Talaysia Douver (Sr., Lakewood, Calif., Sociology) who ran times of 23:22 and 24:17, respectively. Rounding out the scoring positions were Zena Cohuo (Sr., Carrollton, Texas, Exercise Science) who ran a time of 25:09, and Roselaure Fuller (Fr., Pella, Iowa, Nursing), who ran in 26:57.

What’s Next: The Statesmen take a week off before traveling to Des Moines on September 25 to compete in the Grand View Invitational.
