Title winners honored at Central men’s basketball alumni event

Central College

PELLA — Some legends of Central men’s basketball past are returning to Pella to take part in an alumni event Saturday.

Upwards of 50 former Dutch players are expected to their former stomping grounds, and a pair of Central’s 17 Iowa Conference championship teams will be recognized.

Central’s 6-1 varsity squad takes on No. 13-ranked Washington-St. Louis University (Mo.) at 3 p.m. at P.H. Kuyper Gymnasium and at halftime, the 1957-58 and 1970-71 Dutch squads will be honored. Both squads shared league championships and the 1970-71 team was the first of Athletics Hall of Honor coach Jack Walvoord’s 10 squads to earn a conference crown.

An alumni game is scheduled for 1 p.m., with graduates from even-numbered years matched up against grads from odd-numbered years. Preceding the game will be a 3-point shooting contest and a free throw shooting contest.

There is also a formal dinner set for Friday night at 7 p.m. Dinner reservations are required and can be submitted through the college’s alumni office (641-628-5186).
