MILWAUKEE, WIS. — Capping off a busy week in style, the Central College wrestling team bested the 12-team field at the Milwaukee School of Engineering Invitational to win the team title for a third consecutive year.

Finishing with 133.5 team points, the Dutch outpaced the second-place Wheaton College (Ill.) Thunder by 34 points.

“The depth and toughness of our team really showed,” head coach Eric Van Kley said. “The quality of the tournament has gotten better every year with team likes Wheaton and the University of Wisconsin-Platteville.”

Central wrestlers finished on top in three weight classes, including 141 pounds were teammates Jahleel Vester (junior, Oak Harbor, Wash.) and Daniel Radcliffe (freshman, Lockport, Ill., Lockport Township HS) shared the crown. Both Vester and Radcliffe went 3-0.

“They’re making each other better,” Van Kley said. “It’s a great example of two guys on our team being fierce competitors in practice but they also want the best for each other. It was awesome to see both of them make the finals.”

Picking up five victories to win the 165-pound bracket, Ryan Vandall (senior, Phoenix, Ariz., Moon Valley HS) needed some late theatrics to defeat Lakeland University’s (Wis.) Mitchell Fucile in the final 9-7.

“That was probably the match of the day,” Van Kley said. “He got a takedown with 45 seconds left to send it to overtime and then got another takedown in overtime to win it. It was fun to see him wrap up the tournament that way.”

Cam Timok (sophomore, Glen Allen, Va./Hermitage HS) won both of his bouts to win the 133-pound championship.

“He’s growing in confidence each week,” Van Kley said. “He knows he needs to keep improving, but we’re proud of the improvements he’s made.”

The final competition date before Christmas break is next Wednesday for a triangular in Lincoln, Nebraska. The Dutch will take on Iowa Conference newcomers Nebraska Wesleyan University and Northeastern Community College (Colo.)

“We’ve got to finish this semester off right with two strong efforts on Wednesday,” Van Kley said. “We have one more opportunity to build on some things and tweak some things.”
