William Penn Fights Hard in Sweep Against Grand View
Des Moines–The Statesmen volleyball team sparked several times Tuesday night against #19 Grand View, but never could catch fire in being swept 3-0 in Midwest Collegiate Conference play.
William Penn (12-19, 0-3 MCC) lost by scores of 18-25, 19-25, 23-25. The visitors were outhit .301-.158.
The navy and gold led twice in the opening set with the last advantage coming at 9-8. Unfortunately down 14-13, the Statesmen watched as the Vikings (20-11, 4-0 MCC) went on an 11-5 run and cruised to the 1-0 edge.
William Penn stormed out in the second set with the first five points, but the hosts scored six in a row and never trailed again.
A see-saw battle occurred early in the third set, but with the Vikings leading 6-5, the navy and gold responded with six unanswered. Grand View answered with a run of its own, however, to knot things up at 12-12. Things remained tight for a while, but at 17-17, the home team went on a roll to go up 24-20. William Penn made its rival work for it, tightening the deficit to one at 24-23, but the Vikings closed it out to stay perfect in league action.
Shawni Wills (Fr., Oskaloosa, Iowa, Biology) guided WPU with nine kills, while Kristal Campos (Jr., Lancaster, Calif., Sociology) and Alanna Connors (Sr., Libertyville, Ill., Biology) managed six winners each.
Dayna Sammons (Jr., Menomonee Falls, Wis., Software Engineering) and Leyra Jusino (So., Bayamon, P.R., General Biology) both assisted on 13 points, while Danielle Breeher (So., St. Louis, Mo., Undecided) served up two aces. William Penn edged Grand View 3-1 in aces.
Defensively, Sarah Stepp (So., Oakville, Mo., Undecided) dug 14 attacks and Kylie Giger (So., Elkhart, Ind., Exercise Science) blocked three Viking tries (one solo, two assists).
Next: William Penn travels to Dubuque this weekend to compete in the Loras Tournament. On Friday, the Statesmen meet Wisconsin-Stevens Point at 6 p.m. and Wisconsin-Oshkosh at 8 p.m. On Saturday, WPU takes on Wisconsin-River Falls at noon and host Loras at 2 p.m.
