Statesmen Fall in Four Sets to Simpson
Indianola–The William Penn volleyball team traveled west down Highway 92 for a tough non-conference visit against Simpson and came up a few points short in a 3-1 setback Monday.
The Statesmen (12-17) lost by scores of 25-27, 25-17, 18-25, 21-25. The visitors were only outhit .140-.134, but permitted the Storm (13-3) to notch 11 service aces (four for WPU).
After a poor hitting performance by both teams in the opening set (SC held the edge .021 to -.057), the squads warmed up with the navy and gold posting marks of .242 and .333 in the second and third sets, respectively.
Shawni Wills (Fr., Oskaloosa, Iowa, Biology) paced the offense with 13 kills in addition to a .290 attack percentage. Kylie Giger (So., Elkhart, Ind., Exercise Science) also reached double figures with 11 kills.
Jeanette Cunningham (Sr., Mt. Orab, Ohio, Elementary Education), with eight kills, and Alanna Connors (Sr., Libertyville, Ill., Biology), with six, also contributed Monday night. Connors managed 19 digs as well.
Dayna Sammons (Jr., Menomonee Falls, Wis., Software Engineering) assisted 25 times and also paced the defensive effort with five block assists. Giger and Cunningham finished with four block assists each.
