Statesmen Drop First Dual of Year to Truman, 29-11

At 133 pounds, William Penn’s O’Darius Williamson won by decision over Truman’s Will Evans, 4-1 (6-3)

Oskaloosa–A depleted William Penn wrestling team lost to Truman (Mo.) 29-11 in its first dual meet of the year Wednesday night.

The Statesmen (0-1) won just three of matches as neither returning All-American 149-pounder Carey Cloud (So., Havelock, N.C., Physical Education) and starting 133-pounder Joao Vicente (Fr., East Providence, R.I., Secondary Education) were unavailable. Vicente did not make weight, while Cloud is lost for the season with a torn ACL suffered last Saturday.

William Penn did not have a 125-pounder to trail 6-0 immediately. O’Darius Williamson (Sr., Spartanburg, S.C., Physical Education) fortunately got his team on the board at 133 pounds with a 4-1 decision over Will Evans.

The next two matches went in favor of the Bulldogs (3-0) with back-to-back technical falls. Ishmael Rempson (So., Olympia Fields, Ill., Industrial Technology) then dug into the deficit with an 11-3 major decision against Luke Knoche at 157 pounds.

The navy and gold lost two straight matches again before 184-pounder Kyle Soderblom (So., Newton, Iowa, Biology) matched Rempson with a 12-2 major decision victory versus Ryan Ward. The win cut the deficit to 23-11, forcing the Statesmen to win by fall in their final two matchups to claim the meet victory.

Unfortunately, the visitors closed the night with two consecutive decisions to seal the win.

Next: William Penn travels to Storm Lake Saturday to compete in the Buena Vista Open.
